Newman gets 118 yards as Santa Margarita wins

SAN DIEGO – Billy Newman, coming off a 353-yard rushing game last week against Trabuco Hills, played only three quarters for Santa Margarita on Friday night, but he made his time count.

The senior rushed for 118 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown to help the Eagles knock off St. Augustine, 27-7, at Balboa Stadium in San Diego.

Newman's score came on a 1 yard run in the second quarter, capping a 96-yard drive to give Santa Margarita (2-0) a 14-0 lead over the host Saints. "They came to stop Billy and they did a good job of slowing him down.” Eagles assistant coach Adrian Peters said.

Santa Margarita quarterback Çasron Palmer threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Minardi just before halftime, giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead at intermission. Palmer completed 13 of 23 passes for 142 yards.

"They were pretty well prepared and we stuttered a bit," Peters said. “We have a lot of work to do before Servite."

The Eagles play the No. 3 Friárs next Friday.
