Eagles 51 - El Modena 6
ORANGE, CA., November 22, 1996 – The CIF Division V playoffs opened under rainy skies, and as the game went on, it got wetter and wetter for the Vanguards. Billy Newman scored 3 TDs while rushing for 176 yards on only 11 carries. Carson Palmer added 2 scores of his own on quarterback draws near the goaline. The Vanguards did manage to cut the deficit to 21-6 early in the second quarter, but a blocked punt led to another score and the rout was on. El Modena’s touchdown was the only score in the playoffs allowed by the Eagles.

Eagles run by El Modena
MISSION VIEJO – Santa Margarita fought through the rain and mud at Saddleback College to score seven rushing touchdowns and defeat El Modena, 51-6, in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Friday night.
The Eagles (10-1), the No. 2 seed in the division, face Valencia in the quarterfinals next Friday. The home team will be determined by a coin flip today. El Modena finished 4-7.
Santa Margarita set the tone early, needing just four plays to score after the opening kickoff.
Billy Newman did the honors with a 39-yard run. The senior finished with 176 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.
Quarterback Carson Palmer added scoring runs of 11 and 10 yards for the Eagles.
Down 21-0, El Modena tried to get back in the contest with some trickery, as Jerome Anderson hit Ian Souza with a 30-yard touchdown toss on a halfback pass.
The wet conditions, however, hampered the Vanguards kicking game.
