MISSION VIEJO, CA., November 14, 1996 – The Eagles capped a perfect league season with a rout of Corona del Mar at Saddleback College. SM scored on a 3 of their first 4 plays, and Jesse Wyatt’s interception return gave the Eagles a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter. Billy Newman again had a big night while only playing half of the game. Newman touched the ball 9 times, scored 4 TDs and gained 200 yards. The Eagles finished the regular season at 9-1 and 5-0 in league. The team finished ranked third in the Orange County Sportswriters Poll and third in Division V.

Newman scores four TDS to lead Santa Margarita

MISSION VIEJO – Billy Newman scored four touchdowns as Santa Margarita finished the Sea View League season unbeaten with a 55-27 rout against Corona del Mar on Thursday at Saddleback College.

The Eagles (8-1, 4-0) needed just 12 plays to score 48 first-half points. Newman scored on runs of 63, 47 and 20 yards and caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer. Palmer also connected with Brett Crowder for a 48-yard touchdown.

It was a night for Santa Margarita, ranked No. 5 in the county and No. 2 in Division V, to refine its game for the playoffs, and a night of personal achievement for Corona del Mar (4-6, 1-4).

George Sumner caught six passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, setting new school marks for most career receptions, single season receptions and single season reception yardage. Quarterback Mike McClellan, 19 of 38 passing for 353 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, set a school record for most touchdown passes in a single season and most completions in a single season.
