SERIES FACTS: Last year SM tied the series with a 34-21 win. All four games have been won by the home team. The Eagles in 1994 came within inches of upsetting Newport in a 27-22 loss. SM jumped to a 14-0 lead before the Sailors touched the ball, but a deep post route in the last two minutes did in the Eagles. A near-perfect game by the Eagles in 1993 gave SM the third place seed with a 19-0 win. The 1992 game was for second place in the league, and the Sailors used a swarming defense to riddle the Eagles, 27-16. Series tied 2-2.
1996 OUTLOOK: Newport completed a perfect season with the help of many seniors in 1994, and it took its toll in 1995. However, they played well in league, giving El Toro and Irvine a hard time, while upsetting Corona del Mar. The Eagles and Sailors have always had clean, hard-fought games, and the league opener should be another exciting match.
