IRVINE, CA., October 21, 1995 – It didn't take long for the Eagles dismantle the Warriors in week two of the Sea View League, as SM jumped to a 34-3 halftime lead. Billy Newman led the charge with 118 yards and three touchdowns, while Chris Collins threw for 126 yards and another score. The reserves and JV team took over in the second half and held their own against the Woodbridge Varsity. The JV offense scored on a counter run by Jimmy Lopez after Jesse Wyatt intercepted a pass to set up the score. With a showdown verses top ranked El Toro ahead of the Eagles, the squad took care of business early to get some needed rest for the starters.

Santa Margarita rolls over Woodbridge

IRVINE, CA., October 21, 1995 – Eighth-ranked Santa Margarita scored early and often to cruise to a 41-10 Sea View League victory over Woodbridge on Saturday.

The Eagles got three touchdown runs from junior running back Billy Newman. He scored on runs of 3, 24 and 11 yards --- all in the first half.

"We did what we had to do to win the ball game and get us ready for next week,” said Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan. “We were able to keep our guys healthy after the long week, playing on Saturday. But we're 2-0 in league going into our big game next week with El Toro.”

The Eagles (6-1 overall, 2-0 in the Sea View League) scored on all five of their first half possessions, building a 34-3 lead at halftime. Newman and senior quarterback Chris Collins led the way for the Eagles. Collins connected on nine of 11 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagle defense held Woodbridge to 47 yards total offense and three first downs in the first half.

Santa Margarita closed the door on the first half with 15 seconds left. After recovering a Woodbridge fumble with 54 seconds remaining on the Warriors' 33, Newman punched the ball in from 11 yards out to close the scoring.

A bright spot for Woodbridge (0-6-1, 0-2) was the play of sophomore quarterback Adam Lawyer. Inserted in the game in the second half, Lawyer completed three of his first four passes, and finished the game connecting on 11 of 23 for 153 yards and the Warriors' only touchdown.

Santa Margarita used players up from junior varsity for much of the second half, as four quarterbacks took snaps in the game. Sophomore Jimmy Lopez scored the final score for the Eagles, scampering in from 15 yards out.
