Eagles 42 - Tustin 22

TUSTIN, CA., November 17, 1995 – In the first round of the CIF Division V playoffs, Santa Margarita raced to a 44-22 victory in a game that was never close. The Eagles had a 28-0 halftime lead, and lead 35-0 when Tustin finally mounted a charge. Chris Collins set up the first score with a 52-yard run on a quarterback draw. David Munoz scored the first of his two touchdowns and the rout was on. Collins was near perfect, completing seven of eight passes and two touchdowns. The defense put the clamps on the Tiller running game, which gave the offense plenty of opportunities. Tustin's only scoring came against the reserves in the fourth quarter.

Santa Margarita is too much for Tustin

TUSTIN, CA., November 17, 1995 – Santa Margarita quarterback Chris Collins passed for two touchdowns and running back David Munoz added two rushing scores as the Eagles rolled over host Tustin, 42-22, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs at Northrup Field on Friday.

The Tillers defense was no match for Santa Margarita's explosive offense. It took the Eagles (8-3) just four plays and a little over one minute to score their first touchdown. After Collins ran 57 yards on successive carries, Munoz got the touchdown call, pushing it in from the 4-yard line.

Santa Margarita's second score was almost as quick. The Eagles covered 80 yards in six plays and it was 14-0 when Collins found Matt Nickels on a 15-yard crossing pattern for the touchdown.

A 39-yard touchdown scamper by Damien Minna and a 24-yard scoring toss from Collins to Billy O'Connor made it 28-0 at the half.

“We pretty much executed everything we called in the first half," Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said. “We wanted to make sure we got points on the board early and often. When they get the ball they have the ability to sustain long drives and burn a lot of the clock. We didn't want that to happen.”

It didn't happen, as Tustin (4-6-1) was forced to play catch-up in the second half. But after Munoz added another rushing touchdown on the Eagles' first drive of the second half, the 35-point defecit proved too much for the Tillers to overcome.

Tustin finally reached the end zone in the fourth quarter, scoring three times. The last score came with one second left on the clock as Brandon Lambert carried it in from two yards out.

“We've got a long road to go,"

Hartigan said. “I'm just glad we're playing one more week."

Santa Margarita faces Western next week in the quarterfinals.
