So
where does FSU go from there?

That question could be answered this spring or could drag on to fall two-a-day
practices and beyond. The obvious answer is redshirt freshman Chris Rix.
The 6'3", 212-pound quarterback wowed everyone during fall scrimmages.
Twice he lead the second team offense to scoring drives against the first
team defense. He continued his outstanding play during fall practices.
Rix is the closest thing FSU has had to a dual threat quarterback since
Charlie Ward who graduated after the 1993 season. The athletic signal
caller runs a true 4.5-forty and can throw the ball on a rope. What surprised
a lot of onlookers during fall practice was the accuracy and touch displayed
by the 18-year old freshman.
The only negative, and it's a big one, is his lack of experience. The
California native has never taken a snap in a college football game. Furthermore,
Bobby Bowden has never relied on a freshman quarterback to start at the
beginning of the season. Rix could be the first.
Although the lack of experience is a huge disadvantage for a big time
college quarterback, Rix has one big advantage over the competition, he
is the only quarterback on the roster who took snaps last fall.
His mobility will also be an asset with FSU breaking in several new offensive
linemen. An elusive quarterback might be just what the doctor ordered.
Whether Rix' natural ability can be translated into success on the field
remains to be seen. |
