Costello, Santa Margarita right on target in victory

SAN DIEGO, CA., August 28, 2015 – Santa Margarita High’s offensive pace and tempo were in midseason form as the Eagles rolled to a 40-14 win over Cathedral Catholic of San Diego in a nonleague game Friday night.

The Eagles (1-0) were led by senior quarterback KJ Costello, junior running back Trey Green, and senior wide receiver Noah Rasheed, as they overwhelmed the Dons (0-1) from the start.

Santa Margarita, ranked No. 3 in the county, used everything from quick-strike passes to deep throws to pick up a victory in its season opener.

Costello, who has committed to Stanford, was nearly perfect, hitting his receivers in stride as he threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns.

He was also a threat on the ground. He ran for 38 yards on six carries, and scored on a 1-yard sneak following a long pass connection with Rasheed.

Trey Green carried the load on the ground, using his 5-foot-7, 185-pound frame to elude defenders while also running with power. He ran for 114 yards on 16 carries, scoring a touchdown on a screen pass where he went in nearly untouched.

The Eagles’ used their depth in the reviewing corps to keep the Dons defense off balance. The Dons had no answer for Rasheed, Dylan Crawford and Grant Calcaterra.

Cathedral Catholic failed to capitalize on a several penalties called on the Eagles defense.
