Eagles 41 - Orange 6
Santa Margarita rolls past Orange
MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 2, 2009 – A 20-point third quarter helped Santa Margarita break open the game and lifted the Eagles past visiting Orange, 41-6, in a nonleague game Friday night at Saddleback College.
The Eagles improved to 3-2 while the Panthers fell to 0-4.
Spencer Tyson led the charge for Santa Margarita, rushing for a season-high 238 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Two of the scores came in a decisive 59-second span of the third quarter. Tyson ran on all four plays of a 66-yard drive to open the second half, scoring from 1 yard out to extend Santa Margarita’s lead to 28-6 just 54 seconds gone in the third.
Two plays into the ensuing drive, Jeff Emanuel picked off a Tony Torres pass — the only turnover of the briskly moving contest — and returned it 34 yards to the Panthers 7. Tyson needed just one play to collect his third touchdown. It was his final carry of the night.
The Eagles, who did not attempt a pass in the first half, began to throw midway through the third. Quarterback Bobby Crane found Mike Gordon and Max Tuerk to move the ball inside the Orange 20. Cory Thomson eventually turned in his second touchdown run of the night, this one from 6 yards out.
Santa Margarita grabbed a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Thomson scored from 9 yards out to open the scoring, and Tyson sprinted 63 yards for the other score.
Orange was led by running back Axel Sanchez, who rushed for 116 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run.
He also made six receptions for 88 yards.
