2007 EAGLES

Dorsey 12 - Eagles 7

Eagles run over by Franklin, Dons

LOS ANGELES, CA., September 14, 2007 – If anyone thought Santa Margarita had faced its toughest challenge at running back in Darrell Scott of St. Bonaventure of Ventura, Coach Mike Jacot gave that a resounding no. Try Johnathan Franklin of Dorsey.

"This guy by far," Jacot said after Franklin rushed for 268 yards on 26 carries to lead Dorsey to a 12-7 victory against Santa Margarita on Friday night.

"He might be the best we face this season," Jacot said. "He was explosive, the way he ran through people. And we had been working on our tackling all week."

A scoreless first half played out much like the Eagles Week 0 meeting with St. Bonaventure. Both teams found success on the ground, but did little else on offense.

Dorsey (2-1) found success in the third quarter running Franklin off left tackle. He opened the Dons' first possession with four consecutive carries for first downs, and scored from 2 yards out.

On the Dons' next possession, he broke free down the left sideline for an 84-yard touchdown.

Equally frustrating for the Eagles was its pass protection. Dorsey recorded eight sacks, including two by Franklin.

Jacot compared the beating his team took on both sides of the line to last year's Orange Lutheran game when the Lancers ran for more than 300 yards and scored 49 points.

"I've got to do a better job preparing us," Jacot said. "We were flat. We weren't physical. … I felt like we had a decent week of practice. But before the game we were in a weird mood."

Trailing 12-0, Santa Margarita (1-2) moved down the field via running back Carlo Audagnotti, who had 95 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Brett Mason then hit Trevor Brooks for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The Eagles had two chances in the fourth quarter. Their first drive began inside their own 5-yard line and went three and out. The second saw Mason get sacked four times in five plays.

A Dorsey first down ended the game.

On its first possession Santa Margarita moved the ball inside the Dorsey 1-yard line before turning it over on downs.

The Eagles, who lost two games in the 2006 regular season, have a bye next week.

"A loss is always tough," Jacot said. "You want to be in a competitive environment. They came out, they were more prepared than we were.

"I'm speechless," Jacot finally said, echoing his thoughts after the Eagles defeat to St. Bonaventure two weeks ago.
