2003 EAGLES

Eagles 35 - Redlands 0

REDLANDS, CA., September 19, 2003 – Chris Ramsey rushed for 117 yards and two scores, QB Michael Angelo passed for two touchdowns and Ryan Nienhuis returned a punt for a school-record 84-yard touchdown to lead Santa Margarita to a convincing 35-0 win over the Redlands Terriers (0-2) before a crowd of 4,500 at the University of Redlands. Although the Eagles gained a season-high 377 yards and 19 first downs the defense also put on a remarkable show as it limited the Terrier’s wing-T attack to a mere 76 yards and only four first downs with 25 of those yards coming on the last play of the game. On the Eagles second series they marched 80 yards on nine plays with Ramsey gaining 72 yards and scoring from two yards out at the 4:52 mark to make it 7-0. After a missed field goal on the Eagles next possession Nienhuis weaved his way through traffic for his 84-yard score with 8:25 left in the half to make it 14-0. After Jack Meehan recovered a fumble at the 10:50 mark of the third quarter the Eagles needed only five plays to make it 21-0 as Ramsey scored from three yards out. Two possessions later Angelo (11 of 17 for 99 yards) hit Jason Graban for a four-yard score and on their next drive he found Thomas Ramirez on another four-yard scoring toss to close out the scoring. The Eagle defense registered four sacks and held the Terriers to 60 yards on 34 carries, three pass completions and only one play longer than 10 yards all night. They also extended their streak to 13 consecutive games without allowing a touchdown pass.

Santa Margarita stifles Redlands

The Eagles win, 35-0, and allow just 76 yards

REDLANDS – If that old football saying is true that defense wins championships, then this could be a very good season for Santa Margarita.

"We just played good, hard-nosed football tonight. The kids have really bought into this system. There were 11 hats just flying around all over the place looking for the ball," Santa Margarita coach Mike Jacot said after the Eagles' 35-0 nonleague victory against Redlands on Friday night at the University of Redlands. "I told them that if you do that kind of stuff, good things will happen for us."

The Terriers (0-2), who were ranked 10th in the Division I preseason poll, couldn't get anything going on offense, managing just 76 total yards and four first downs.

This also was the 13th consecutive game in which Santa Margarita (2-0) has not allowed a passing touchdown.

"This kind of game really says a lot about out team. We left the school at 12:30 to beat all of the traffic to get here," Jacot said. "But we got here very early and ended up practicing in a field. It is very tough on the kids because it took them out of their normal routine. And I am proud of the way they were able to adjust."

Chris Ramsey rushed for 106 yards on 16 carries. The senior running back gave Santa Margarita a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he dived over the line for a 2-yard score.

He rushed for a 3-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put the Eagles in front, 21-0.

Michael Angelo completed 10 of 15 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

Ryan Neinhuis' 84-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter broke a school record of 67 yards set by Johnnie Walker against AB Miller in 2000.
