Santa Margarita rumbles past Littlerock, 35-0
MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 18, 1991 – Santa Margarita High coach Jim Hartigan likes the direction his team is going: straight up.
A week after upsetting previously undefeated Servite, the Eagles whipped Littlerock, 35-0, on Friday night at Saddleback College.
Senior running back Josh Ireland rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns for Santa Margarita (3-3).
Both Santa Margarita and Littlerock (4-2) play free-lance schedules.
Santa Margarita built a 21-0 lead at the half, and its defense had no problem controlling the line of scrimmage against the Lobos.
Ireland rushed for touchdowns of 2 and 1 yards and caught a 55-yard scoring pass from quarterback Sean O'Brien.
Santa Margarita running back Anton Villanueva scored on a 20-yard run to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
J.J. Wilson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from O'Brien midway through the second quarter to give Santa Margarita a 14-0 lead.
Ireland then made it 21-0 with 26 seconds left in the half on his 2-yard run.
O'Brien completed 10 of 15 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Four Santa Margarita players caught two passes each.
"We've done some things the last two weeks to pick things up," Hartigan said.
"Our goal is to win the rest of our games for a 7-3 record and to make the playoffs. I think we have a good chance of doing that now, if we keep improving."
