PLAYOFF HISTORY
The Eagles lost to Baldwin Park, 13-7, in the semifinals of the Division IV playoffs last year. In 1989, their first varsity season, the Eagles lost to eventual champion Carpinteria, 21-14, in Division IX's second round.

KEY STATISTIC
Josh Ireland has rushed for 1,180 yards and 19 touchdowns on 174 carries.

OUTLOOK
The Eagles were placed in the Division V bracket by the CIF Southern Section. They had to win their last three, including a 28-0 triumph over Elsinore in the season finale, to qualify for a playoff berth.

Here's why Santa Margarita was placed in Division V in the football playoffs, according to CIF administrator Bill Clark: "It was tough to place them. They didn't play a Division IV (type of) schedule. But if we moved them down (to Division VI), then we would have to bump University, and Santa Margarita lost to University."

Santa Margarita (7-3) coach Jim Hartigan had hoped for the Division VI at-large berth. The Eagles do not compete in a league; last year, they were placed in Division IV and reached the semifinals.

But Hartigan was pleased to be in this division. The Eagles will play at Colton (8-2) on Friday.

"To be honest," Hartigan said, "I was a little nervous that we weren't going to get anything at all. We're just happy to be in."

Colton is the No. 4 seed. Corona (8-2), Mountain View League champion, is the top seed. Arroyo (7-3) is seeded second, and Norco (7-3) third. Etiwanda is the defending division champion.
