PREP NOTES : After Rough Journey, They’ll Travel in Style

Life on the road is about to get a little more comfortable for Santa Margarita High School’s football team.

Last Friday, Santa Margarita’s sophomore, junior varsity and varsity teams played a tripleheader at Brawley. The varsity game started at 9:20 p.m. and ended at 11:20. The teams returned to Santa Margarita at 3:45 a.m.

“We slept in the weight room at school,” Santa Margarita Coach Jim Hartigan said. “We had 120 boys in sleeping bags on the floor. We fed them breakfast and then had our Saturday workout. It was a really long weekend.”

This week, the weekend will be a day longer, but the accommodations will be nicer when Santa Margarita travels on Friday to San Luis Obispo. The team will leave at 11 a.m. today and practice at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo.

Santa Margarita teams will stay two nights at the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo. A tour of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus is scheduled Friday morning. A booster party at a local community center is scheduled Saturday night.

“This is going to be a fun trip,” Hartigan said. “The bus ride to Brawley was long, but the kids bring their Walkmans, computer games, and believe it or not, some of them actually study.”
