Because of Tanner's outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom he was offered an appointment to the US Naval Academy to play football. In 2019 he appeared in all 13 games, primarily as a member of special teams. Earned one varsity letter.

Tanner Matthews a was a two-sport athlete for the Eagles who earned letters in football (3) and volleyball (2) A three-time Trinity League selection as a linebacker, earning honorable mention as a sophomore, second team as a junior and first team as a senior. He was 1st-team All-Orange County by the Register. Ranks 14th on the Eagles All-time Tackles rankings with 214 total tackles.
