Last Game Vs. Servite

A short preparation when facing a team like Servite is never welcomed. Santa Margarita Catholic was riding a four-game winning-streak as it visited Orange Coast College. The early going was a struggle for the Eagles who broke down on defense and allowed three scores in the first quarter. Coach Anthony Rouzier’s boys settled down and found some rhythm on offense to register two touchdowns and go to intermission with a manageable 21-14 deficit. However, in the second half, the Friar’s strength in the trenches emerged and shutdown SMCHS. They had no answer for Houston Thomas and the big holes his O-line would open. The Eagle’s defense didn’t receive the big play contributions that they enjoyed the past few week’s either. One bright spot was the 63-yard touchdown scamper from Justin Rivera. Juniors Donovan Comestro and Jacob Bower notched 24 combined tackles. Comestro and Israel Solomon also managed to intercept Fifita. SMCHS continues its three-game road tour with another tall task versus No. 1 Mater Dei at the Santa Ana Bowl.

In Brief: Year-in and year-out, Mater Dei is not only one of the premier high school football programs California, but the entire nation. The shortened “2020” season was played earlier this spring. Mater Dei finished 5-0 with a huge 34-17 win over rival St. John Bosco to end the season. The CIF-Southern Section playoffs were cancelled, but the Monarchs will look to add another state championship in 2021. Bruce Rollinson returns for his 33rd year as Head Coach. In 32-plus seasons he has compiled an overall record of 321-86-2, good for a .787 winning percentage. While at the helm, he has guided the Monarchs to eight CIF-SS championships, three State Titles as well as four USA Today national titles (1994 and 1996, 2017 and 2018). With 19 more victories, Rollinson will become the all-time winningest coach in CIF-Southern Section history. Rollinson and offensive coordinator Dave Money and defensive coordinator Eric Johnson are a staff that has been together for decades. The Monarchs have a bevy of talent returning on both sides of the ball. On offense there is experience at quarterback and receiver, depth at running back and a mammoth offensive line. There front seven on defense is superb. In addition, Mater Dei has what is probably the best defensive backfield in the state and maybe the nation.

NEXT WEEK’S OPPONENT: St. John Bosco

SMCHS Season Game No. 9 / Trinity League Game No. 4

All-Time Series: St. John Bosco leads 15-10-0
Last Game: St. John Bosco won 65-28 @ Santa Ana Bowl - Spring 2021

  • Rayshon Luke | Senior | Running Back

  • Sione Hala | Senior | Defensive Back

In Brief: St. John Bosco came into the 2021 Fall season with two-straight second place finishes in the Trinity League standings in 2019 and 2021 (Spring). However, despite falling short against Mater Dei both times, they are still the defending CIF-Southern Section and State Champion. Overall, Bosco has won three CIF State Championships and two National Championship. This season, they are poised to repeat as they return 18 starters (eight offense and 10 defense). Thirty-nine players on the roster hold at least one scholarship offer.

Before the start of the season, MaxPreps.com rated Bosco’s schedule as the as the most difficult in the country. They played top national teams from Florida, Illinois and Virginia and disposed of them in dominating fashion. The game versus Mater Dei didn’t go as well. The two teams were tied 21-21 at half, only to see the Monarchs rocket to a 42-21 victory.

The Braves employ a two quarterback system with senior Katin Houser and junior Pierce Clarkson alternating each series. Seniors Jabari Bates and Rayshon Luke are the team’s top two running backs. Mateo Uiagalelei is a tight end and defensive end that can change the course of a game quickly, on either side of the ball. Tackle Earnest Greene leads the offensive line. Tyson Molio’o and Maicah Talavou also return up front.

The strength of Bosco’s team is the versatility it has in many of its top defensive players. Jalen Woods and Sione Hala can play in the secondary or move up to play linebacker, depending on which personnel group the opposition runs.
HEAD COACH Anthony Rouzier

Anthony Rouzier begins his second season as the Head Varsity Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Prior to taking the reigns of the program in the spring of 2021, Rouzier coached at SMC for three seasons, first serving as the linebacker coach and then as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. The path to Head Coach started on August 27, 2020 when Rouzier was named on an interim basis. He replaced Tim Walsh after his resignation from the position to focus on a medical issue. On February 5, 2021, Rouzier was named fulltime Head Coach by school President Andy Sulick.

Rouzier played collegiately at the University of Connecticut in 2005. There he was the first true freshman walk-on to start in the Division-era of the school. He then transferred to the University of Massachusetts as a scholarship athlete and was a member of two Colonial Athletic Conference championships teams. In the classroom, Rouzier earned All-Academic All-Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.

After his collegiate playing days, in 2014, Rouzier coached at Amherst Regional High School (Massachusetts) where he started as the linebacker coach and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator mid-season. Rouzier then proceeded to coach the outside linebackers at Winston-Salem State University (North Carolina) in the spring of 2015. Shortly after that, he returned as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, the University of Massachusetts. There he worked with the defensive backs in 2015 and linebackers in 2016.

Rouzier then found his way to Europe to coach with the Hamburg Huskies of the German Football League. There, in 2017, he was the interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. For his success, Rouzier was promoted to and accepted the Head Coaching position. Rouzier was also the Defensive Coordinator for the Under-17 Hamburg State All-Star team and worked with a recruiting service that helped European prospects earn Division 1 college scholarships in the United States. One of the other German coaches was current SMC assistant coach Sean Embree. It was Embree who convinced Rouzier that coaching at SMC would be worth his while and he soon found his way to South Orange County.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rouzier married his wife Elwira, who he met in Germany in 2018. He holds Juris Doctor and Master’s of Business Administration degrees from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-creator of a children’s book and non-profit organization that promotes health and wellness.
