JSerra 35 - Eagles 3

Green provides spark in JSerra victory against Santa Margarita

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CO., October 4, 2019 – JSerra made several adjustments at halftime of its Trinity League game against Santa Margarita on Friday night.

Those adjustments didn’t involve Sammy Green, who was a bright spot from start to finish for the Lions.

Green scored three touchdowns, two in the second half, and rushed for 114 yards on 14 carries as the Lions scored 28 points in the third quarter and defeated the Eagles 35-3 at JSerra High.

“Sammy is a stud,” JSerra coach Pat Harlow said. “He has such a forward lean. His legs are always going forward. He has a lot of desire and he was pretty pumped up at halftime. He didn’t want to let his brothers down and he put his words into action. He was awesome.”

Green scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, but JSerra (5-1, 1-0 in league) was kept off the scoreboard the rest of the half.

Santa Margarita (3-3, 0-1) drove to the red zone twice in the second quarter, but the Eagles were held to one field goal by kicker Connor Teasley.

The Lions were up 7-3 at the half, but frustrated by their failure to put more points on the board.

“When I got in the locker room, I told my team ‘Let’s go!’ Green said. “We can do this, let’s play for each other. I love my brothers. I had to get my team hyped and ready to go for the second half.”

Green had more success in the second half, and scored on runs of 1 yard and 11 yards. He also finished two receptions for 74 yards.

The Lions secured the victory with a score by its defense. Jaden Genova had a sack that forced a fumble, and the ball was picked up by Malaki Te’o, who returned it for a score.

The Lions scored 28 points in the third quarter.

“Coach just called a great blitz,” Genova said. “I came off the edge free and the quarterback didn’t know what hit him.”

Nick Barcelos rushed for 51 yards on 19 carries while Colt Fulton was 11 of 23 passing for 137 yards and an interceptions.

Mitch Messier had nine tackles for Santa Margarita.

The Eagles face Orange Lutheran, which lost 51-14 to Mater Dei, on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Trabuco Hills High.

Genova had 10 tackles and two sacks, and quarterback General Booty was 5 of 11 passing for 150 yards and an interception.

JSerra will host St. John Bosco, a 27-26 winner over Servite, on Friday, Oct. 11.
