Santa Margarita football grinds out victory over Mayfair

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 12, 2019 – Santa Margarita running back Nick Barcelos scored two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 21-0 victory over Mayfair in a non-league game Thursday at Trabuco Hills High School.

Barcelos ran for 154 yards and two TDs on 23 carries and the Eagles’ defense and special teams took care of everything else.

Defensive back Mitch Messier had a pair of interceptions and Billy Oberholtzer had three of six sacks for the Eagles (2-2), who held Mayfair (1-3) to 47 yards of offense and three first downs.

Mayfair’s first-half possessions resulted in three punts, an unsuccessful fake punt ,an interception, and a blocked punt in the end zone that resulted in a safety.

The Eagles led 8-0 in the fourth quarter when defensive end Derek Wilkins blocked a punt in the end zone, which was recovered by teammate Tyler Whitman for a touchdown.

“Always flipping field position is a big thing for us,” said Wilkins, who has received offers from Arizona State, Oregon State and San Jose State. “When we back them up, we help the offense out. Honestly, we try to play fast. That’s what we did. We were in the backfield all day.”

Santa Margarita moved the ball in the first half but wasn’t able to finish off drives.

The Eagles’ first drive ended with a missed field goal and their second drive ended with an incomplete pass on a fourth-and-6 from the Mayfair 26.

The Eagles drove into Mayfair territory three more times in the second quarter but came up empty each time.

The second-quarter safety accounted for the only scoring in the first half.

“We really started slow and give Mayfair credit,” Santa Margarita coach Brent Vieselmeyer said.

Santa Margarita’s offensive line began wearing down Mayfair’s defensive front in the second half.

Late in the quarter, Barcelos capped a 93-yard scoring drive by running through a gaping hole for a 36-yard touchdown.

“We’re young up front, but I think they kept going and kept grinding,” Vieselmeyer said. “After so much running, we got it punched in there.”

In the fourth, Oberholtzer delivered a hit on quarterback Jalen Coleman that caused a fumble that was recovered by Wilkins on the Mayfair 15.

Barcelos scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run three plays later.

“We got going there in the end a little bit,” Vieselmeyer said.

The Eagles’ two losses this season have come against Mission Viejo, which is ranked No. 6 in CIF-SS Division 1/2, and against Cherry Creek, the top-ranked team in Colorado.
