2018 EAGLES

Eagles 55 - Mayfair 7

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 7, 2018 – The Eagles looked like the Eagles again last week. After dropping consecutive games to Mission Viejo (#11 in California, #58 in the nation) and Cherry Creek (#1 in Colorado, #144 in the nation), Santa Margarita (2-2, #32 in California, #213 in the nation) used a balanced attack of rushing (37) and passing attempts (34) to claim their second win of the season. Sophomore quarterback Peter Costelli was efficient, completing 14 of 20 passes (70%) for 235 yards and a touchdown. On the receiving end of that touchdown was sophomore Drew Sulick who made his first varsity appearance in the end zone with his lone catch of the night worth 28 yards. Costelli was generous with his pass distribution, connecting with seven different Eagles in all. Junior Chase Nenad was the leading receiver for the Eagles with five receptions for 85 yards, while senior Jake Ebach finished his night with four catches for 72 yards.

The Eagles got the run game going courtesy of the offensive lines dominant performance. Senior Jake Thomas had a career night, rushing for 152 yards on 17 carries (8.9 average) and five touchdowns. His five touchdowns now put him second on the all-time list for rushing touchdowns in a game behind only Ryan Wolpin (6, 2012 vs. Carson). Costelli finished his night with four carries for 63 yards and a touchdown, while junior Nick Barcelos rushed for 54 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown of his own, his first of the season.

After settling down, the Eagle defense proved to be too much for the Monsoons, holding them to 77 receiving yards and 167 rushing yards. Senior captain Connor Burke led the Eagles with 11 tackles and Gregory Doyle hauled in a sack, his third of the season.
