2013 EAGLES

Eagles 49 - Carson 6

Eagles Continue To Fly Upward

CARSON, CA., September 20, 2013 – Shortly following Santa Margarita's victory against Dorsey last week, Jeremy McNichols believed the Eagles would keep rolling after they had picked up their first win of the season.

Against Carson, McNichols' teammates made him look like a prophet for at least a week.

No. 5 Santa Margarita rolled to a dominating 49-6 victory against the Colts in a non league contest at Carson on Friday night.

“We just had a great game against a pretty good team,” McNichols said. “We just played as a team, as a unit, as one, like coach has been preaching to us all year."

Sophomore quarterback KJ Costello has spent the first three games of the season showing flashes of brilliance, but also flashes of his youth, as he has thrown nine interceptions.

Costello had no such problems with turnovers against Carson. He completed 9 of 11 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns - and most important, no interceptions.

"I thought KJ was the best," Eagles coach Harry Welch said. "He was always under control, and he was changing some plays at the line. When he was passing, he was avoiding high risk.”

Santa Margarita (2-2) opened the scoring when Costello found Rick Ellison for a touchdown on a 41-yard catch and run.

McNichols added the second score three minutes later on a 9-yard run, which happened after the Colts botched a punt.

McNichols, a senior, rushed for 98 yards on 15 carries and caught two passes for 34 yards.

The Eagles also received contributions on the ground from Matthew Mark.

"We've got a sophomore, who's going to be pretty good at running back," Welch said of Mark.

"He's the real deal, and no one knows about him, but he's going to be very, very good."

Mark finished with 65 yards rushing and his first quarter touchdown put the Eagles up, 21-0.
