Eagles Fall In Double Overtime

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 6, 2013 – Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas has gotten a good taste of what Trinity League football is
like the past two weeks, and the Gaels would fit perfectly in arguably one of the toughest league's in the state.

Regulation wasn't enough to decide a victor between Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita on Friday at Saddleback College.

It took record-breaking efforts from Santa Margarita's sophomore quarterback KJ Costello and junior wide receiver Kyle Sweet to get the Eagles to overtime, but Bishop Gorman prevailed in double overtime, 34-31. The Gaels (2-1) have beaten Servite and Santa Margarita (0-2) in successive weeks.

Bishop Gorman got the first crack on offense in overtime, but Santa Margarita's defense stood strong. The Gaels started from the 25-yard line and couldn't get a first down. Gaels kicker Ahmed Ramiz came on to attempt a 37-yard field goal, but he never got a chance because the snap went through the holder's hands.

Santa Margarita had all the momentum when its offense came on the field in overtime. On third-and-9 from the 24, Costello hit Grant Clancy for what appeared to be the winning 24-yard touchdown pass. Clancy appeared to cross the plane of the end zone and then had the ball knocked out of his hands and through the end zone. The officials ruled he never had control.

Eagles kicker Alex Ury came on to attempt a 42-yard field goal, but it was wide left. Santa Margarita got the ball to start the second overtime. The Eagles were unable to move the ball and Ury's 38-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

Bishop Gorman picked up one first down on its second try in overtime before stalling again. Ramiz stepped up and drilled the winning 28-yard field goal.

Costello completed 26 of 46 passes for a school-record 449 yards and four touchdowns. He also was picked off twice.

Officials admit error in Santa Margarita-Bishop Gorman game

The referee for last week’s Santa Margarita-Bishop Gorman football game has sent an email apologizing to Coach Harry Welch for a blown call in Santa Margarita’s 34-31 double overtime loss.

A 24-yard pass to Grant Clancy in the first overtime was signaled a touchdown by one offical but ruled incomplete by another as he lost control crossing the goal line. Santa Margarita later missed a field goal. Additional video indicated it should have been a touchdown.

In the email, Bob Yoakum wrote, “On behalf of my crew, we apologize to your team, coaching staff and the SMCHS community for this incorrect call. I take full responsibility for this mistake. My crew should have been in the right spot to make the correct call. We will use this as a learning experience.”

Welch said of the email, “It takes a strong man to admit a mistake. I am most impressed with Mr. Yoakum, especially since my mistakes are too numerous to calculate.”
