Santa Margarita rallies, pulls out win in OT

BELLFLOWER, CA., October 29, 2010 – Fourth-ranked Santa Margarita completed the largest comeback in school history in dramatic fashion Friday night.

River Cracraft knocked down a potential game-winning 2-point try in overtime to secure the Eagles’ 42-41 victory against St. John Bosco of Bellflower in a Trinity League football game at St. John Bosco High.

The Eagles (7-1, 3-0) scored first in overtime when Johnny Stanton found Logan Sweet on a 24-yard scoring pass. The Braves (4-4, 0-3) answered with a 3-yard run from Martin Brown and decided to go for the victory.

The Eagles had a 21-yard field goal attempt blocked as time expired. Santa Margarita trailed 20-0 before rallying.

“We have a team of heroes,” Eagles coach Harry Welch said. “There were so many highs and lows. We were down 20 and it looked like it was going to be an embarrassing blowout, but it wasn’t.”

Quarterback Adam Young, starting after not playing last week, began the comeback before leaving with a shoulder injury. Stanton, Young’s replacement last week, continued the charge.

An interception by Cracraft gave the Eagles the ball back when they were trailing, 27-21.

Stanton then connected with Reiley Higgins on a 15-yard touchdown, giving Santa Margarita its first lead, 28-27.

Nick Owens recovered a fumble on the ensuing drive and the Eagles took advantage when Stanton scored from 4 yards to make it 35-27.

St. John Bosco tied it at 35 on a 5-yard touchdown run by Martin Brown and a 2-point conversion with 1:35 remaining.
