Carlsbad 40 - Eagles 20

CARLSBAD, CA., September 17, 1999 – Pana Faumuina rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown to lead the 12th ranked Carlsbad Lancers to a 40-20 win over the 5th ranked Eagles at Carlsbad High School. The win dropped the Eagles from their spot at the top of the Orange County rankings after only one week. The Lancers used a punishing running attack on their first few series to eat time off the clock building a 14-0 lead and limiting the Eagles to eight offensive plays. Carlsbad then used a balanced attack to score on their next six possessions to take a 33-3 lead in the third quarter. Santa Margarita struggled offensively all night and managed only 231 yards of total offense. The bright spots for the Eagles were the play of junior QB Matt Dlugolecki who completed 9-13 passes for 94 yards including five-yard touchdown to senior WR Dustin Creager, and a dazzling 72-yard touchdown run by senior QB Chris Rix on a quarterback draw in the third quarter. Defensively, Jimmy Whithorne and Matt Szkalak recorded 11 tackles each. Junior David Doomey tied an Eagle record with two field goals in a game hitting from 33 and 40 yards out.

Santa Margarita undone by five turnovers in loss

CARLSBAD – The Carlsbad Lancers turned in a dominating performance and defeated Santa Margarita, 40-20, in a nonleague game Friday night in Carlsbad.

The Eagles (1-1), ranked first in Orange County and fifth in the state by Cal-Hi Sports magazine, were hurt by five turnovers, all of which led to Carlsbad points.

"We moved the ball, but turnovers killed us," Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said. "Every time we got any momentum, we turned the ball over."

The Lancers' (2-0) strength was their ground game. Carlsbad used a punishing rushing attack and gained 251 yards on the ground. Pana Faumuina led the way with 110 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

"He's a load," Hartigan said. "We had trouble stopping him last year too."

Carlsbad took control right off the bat. The Lancers marched 78 yards and scored when Brian Gutierrez found John Waardenburg open in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

On that drive Carlsbad had seven first downs and Faumuina gained 49 yards.

The Lancers entered the game ranked 12th in the state but Hartigan believed they were a little underrated.

"They're definitely a top 10 team," Hartigan said. "A team has to play great in order to have a chance against them."

One of the few bright spots for the Eagles came when quarterback Chris Rix ran 72 yards on a quarterback draw for a touchdown late in the third quarter.

The Eagles will attempt to bounce back Friday when they face Dana Hills at home at 7:30 p.m.
