Big plays go way of El Toro

MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 21, 1994 – El Toro coach Mike Milner had grown weary of watching his defense give up big plays this season, so the Chargers gave him some relief Friday night.

The Chargers broke three long runs for touchdowns and forced five Santa Margarita turnovers in a 33-9 Sea View League victory at Trabuco Hills High.

El Toro (4-3, 1-1) scored 24 points in the second half to break a 9-9 halftime tie in the first meeting between the schools. After the Chargers had allowed three long touchdowns last week in their 35-28 loss to Corona del Mar, Milner wanted to see an end to his defense's lapses.

"It's about time we got to enjoy the other side of it," Milner said. "We made some plays and capitalized on them for points, which was very critical."

The Chargers came out of the break quickly. Joe Ader returned the second-half kickoff 47 yards, and Jamie Hanaway, who finished with 96 yards rushing on 14 carries, rambled 53 yards on the first play for his second touchdown of the game.

Santa Margarita (3-4, 1-1), which has 10 turnovers in its past two games, promptly fumbled twice and threw an interception to lose its first three second-half possessions. The last two turnovers resulted in a 45-yard field goal by Chad Johnson and Murle Sango's 65-yard run, putting El Toro up, 26-9.

Ader added a 46-yard touchdown run with 8:46 left in the game.

El Toro Turns Turnover Tables in 33-9 Romp

MISSION VIEJO, CA., October 21, 1994 – El Toro has been plagued by turnovers for much of the season, but one quarter against Santa Margarita Friday night almost evened the breaks.

The Eagles turned over the ball three times in their first nine plays of the third quarter and El Toro scored 17 points en route to a 33-9 Sea View League victory in front of a homecoming crowd of about 1,200 at Trabuco Hills High.

Tied, 9-9, at halftime, Charger running backs Jamie Hanaway, Murle Sango and Joe Ader scored on second-half runs of 54, 65 and 47, respectively.

It was the first football game between El Toro (4-3, 1-1) and Santa Margarita (3-4, 1-1).

“Those big plays helped us, but I was really proud of our defense,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said. “It’s not easy playing against an option offense. I thought we did a good job tonight.”

El Toro scored on its first two possessions of the opening half, first on a 25-yard run by Hanaway, then on a 27-yard field goal by Chad Johnson.

But Santa Margarita’s defense held the Chargers to two yards in their last two possessions of the half. Eagle quarterback Chad Collins connected with Matt Nickels for a 25-yard touchdown with 1:01 left. On El Toro’s next play, Brian Wilson was intercepted by Matt Ahmer at the Charger 49 and Ryan Korinke kicked a school-record 47-yard field goal as time expired.

The second half belonged to El Toro, however. The Eagles never ventured into Charger territory. Hanaway scored on the first play and Johnson kicked a career-best 45-yard field goal.

Hanaway finished with 104 yards in 14 carries. Sango had 88 in nine.
