Eagles 51 - Woodbridge 32

Eagles Rally to Outscore Woodbridge, 51-32

MISSION VIEJO, CA., November 13, 1992 – After a trying week of practice following the injury to junior Darren Wedertz in the Newport Harbor Junior Varsity game, the Eagles came out a little sluggish and somber.

The Warriors (2-7-1, 1-5-1) jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on two Shea Stone passes. The Eagles came storming back to tie the score after Chris Tiernan's 1-yard run and Kevin Duffy's 46-yard reception from Sean O'Brien.

But the night would turn into a score fest as Stone connected on another touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 20-14 lead with time running out in the first half. The Eagles (8-2, 5-2) took the lead on Tiernan's 10-yard run, capping another successful two-minute drive.

The game was put out of reach in the third quarter as SM scored three successive times, two on interceptions by Kevin Duffy and Brad Finneran.

However, the scoring continued to the very end as Woodbridge scored two more times through the air, and the Eagles countered with a 24-yard field goal by Ryan Korinke and Brad Finneran's 26-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

For the fourth straight year SM qualified for the playoffs as the third place representative of the league.

Santa Margarita rolls, 51-32

MISSION VIEJO – It was understandably a distracted and solemn Santa Margarita team that took the field Friday night at Saddleback College.

For the past week, the players' thoughts have been with Darren Wedertz, who one week ago suffered a severe head injury and has been in a coma since.

It took two quick touchdowns by Woodbridge to awaken the Eagles, but from there on out it was no stopping them in a 51-32 victory before a crowd of 3,000.

"We were coming off a trying week with Darren's situation," Eagles coach Jim Hartigan said. "They got the tempo but we regrouped and came back."

Santa Margarita (8-2, 5-2), ranked No. 10 in Orange County, finishes in third place in the Sea View League behind Irvine and Newport Harbor.

The Warriors end their season 2-7-1 overall, 1-5-1 in league. Santa Margarita rallied for 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-20 halftime lead. Chris Tiernan scored the second of his two touchdowns on a 10-yard run with 17 seconds left.

The Eagles took control of the game in the third by scoring 23 points.

On the defense: Bill Atkinson led the Warriors with seven tackles. Tiernan had six for Santa Margarita.
