University stops conversion try for 13-12 victory

IRVINE, CA., September 19, 1991 – Senior running back Sammy Hunt ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and University held back a two-point conversion try late in the game to record a 13-12 victory over Santa Margarita in a non-league game at Irvine High on Thursday night.

Hunt gave University a 6-0 lead on a 28-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The Trojans (1-1) made it 13-0 with 4:56 left in the third quarter on a 5-yard pass from Chris Peake to Jerry Apana.

But Santa Margaritä (0-2) came back behind Josh Ireland. The senior tailback, who gained 102 yards on 18 carries, scored on a 12-yard run with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 13-6.

The Eagles started their final drive with 2:50 to play. They drove 64 yards in 12 plays, capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Sean O'Brien to Brian Finneran.
The Eagles attempted to win the game with a two-point conversion, but it failed when O'Brien tripped and was downed at the line of scrimmage on an option play.

It was my decision to go for two and I thought it was a good play call, said Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan. "He was going for the goal line and just tripped."
