Derek lettered 3x at Santa Margarita and was a 2 year starter at tackle. In those 3 years, Derek blocked for Eagle Greats like Carson Palmer, Greg Orlando, Bryant Wolfsberger, and Spencer McCroskey. Derek was one of the many OL unsung heros who's blocks paved the way for many records both rushing and passing during the Eagle's 3 consecutive years in the CIF Finals.

Derek received a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.
